What we will ask about
- What fuel is already at the property — natural gas, propane, or neither yet.
- What has to keep running: well pump, HVAC, freezers, medical equipment, a shop or barn.
- Your electrical service size and the condition of the main panel.
- Where a generator could reasonably sit, and how far that is from the meter and the panel.
- Whether there is an existing generator, and what its history is.
- How you plan to pay for it: outright, or spread over time through a lender.
You do not need answers to all of it. The site visit exists precisely because most people do not know their panel capacity off the top of their head.

While you wait
Worth reading before we talk
Two things decide most of what a generator project costs, and both are worth understanding before the first conversation. The first is sizing: the starting load of your air conditioner and well pump matters far more than the square footage of the house, which is covered in generator sizing. The second is what happens at the panel, since the transfer switch and any panel work are real line items rather than accessories.
