The local distinction
A mailing address and a city address are not the same thing
This is the most commercially useful fact anyone can tell you about backup power out here, and it is a geography fact rather than a generator fact. The incorporated city is 2.63 square miles. Aledo ISD covers 131.13 square miles across two counties, taking in Annetta and Annetta South, part of Annetta North, and slices of Cresson, Hudson Oaks and Willow Park.
Which means the majority of people who write this name on an envelope live well outside the city, past the end of the gas mains, on a septic system, often on a private well, and frequently on a cooperative meter rather than an investor-owned one. The quote for a house on a platted city lot and the quote for a place on ten acres four miles out are not variations of each other. They are different jobs.
The growth makes it sharper. The 2020 census counted 4,858 residents, up 78.9 percent from 2,716 ten years earlier, with 34.4 percent of the population under 18 and 84.4 percent of housing units owner-occupied. Young families, new construction, and a build-out pushing into land that has never had a gas line under it.

The Railroad Commission publishes a meter count per city per utility. Read against the housing count, it draws the line for you.

Roughly two out of three housing units inside the city have a gas meter, which is the highest ratio in the county and worth knowing before anyone quotes you a propane tank you do not need. It also means the install is often a straightforward tie-in, provided the supply line can carry the generator on top of the furnace, the range and the water heater. The wire
Oncor or the co-op, and we check rather than guess
This corner of the county is old cooperative country. Tri-County Electric Cooperative was organized in 1938 near Azle, its federal designation was literally “Texas 101-Parker,” and its first line ran from Weatherford to Azle, straight through here. It now maintains more than 9,660 miles of distribution line across 16 counties. Oncor also serves this part of Parker County. No public map resolves the boundary at address level, so we read the bill on the site visit.
The difference is not academic. A co-op member cannot shop retail providers and reports outages to the co-op. An Oncor customer has a retail provider on the bill but calls Oncor when the lights go. In 2021, Tri-County reported an average of 1,907.9 minutes off per member to the federal government, close to 32 hours; Oncor reported 558.8 minutes. Both numbers include major storm days, and both are the utilities’ own filings rather than anyone’s estimate.
The city itself provides water, wastewater and residential solid waste. It does not provide electricity, which surprises people who assume the utility bill and the power company are the same organization. Either way the connection point is identical: an automatic transfer switch that isolates the house from the utility before the engine picks it up.

I have an Aledo address. Does that mean I can get natural gas?
Not on its own. The city covers 2.63 square miles. The school district covers 131.13 square miles across Parker and Tarrant counties. Most people with this mailing address live outside the city, past the end of the gas distribution system, and their generator will run on propane. Inside the limits it is a different picture: the Railroad Commission recorded 1,058 residential Texas Gas Service meters here for 2022 against roughly 1,608 housing units, which is the highest coverage ratio of any town in the county.
How do I find out whether I am on Oncor or on the co-op?
Look at the bill. If it comes from a retail electric provider you chose, the wires belong to Oncor and outages get reported to Oncor. If it comes from Tri-County Electric Cooperative, you are a member rather than a customer, there is no plan to shop, and the co-op handles both the billing and the restoration. Territory here is not neatly divided by city limit or ZIP code, so we check it at the meter instead of assuming.
Does the city require a permit for a home generator?
The city adopted the 2021 International Building Code and the 2020 National Electrical Code and registers contractors working inside the limits. Since 1 September 2025, Texas SB 1252 has barred municipalities from regulating the installation or inspection of a residential backup power system rated 50 kW or under, with an exception for cities that own their electric utility. This one does not. Licensing did not change: the work still has to be done by a licensed Texas electrical contractor to the governing code edition, which is where TECL #41587 and Master Electrician oversight come in.
We are in a newer two-story house. What actually needs backing up?
Usually less than people assume, and more than a portable can carry. Two air conditioning compressors dominate the peak in summer, and they draw several times their running current for the instant they start. Add the refrigerator and freezer, the internet and the garage door, and on a septic property the aerator. A managed whole-home design with load control often lets a smaller unit cover the same house, which is worth pricing before you buy a bigger machine than the load list justifies.
What size propane tank do we need on an acreage lot?
For a 22 kW air-cooled unit running through a multi-day outage, a 500-gallon tank is the usual starting point. The variables are how much of the house you want carried, how long you want to go without a delivery, and how cold it gets, because a tank has a vaporization limit and a small tank on a freezing morning can starve a hungry engine. Tank siting also has to clear the generator by ten feet, which affects where the pad can go.
