Before you send it
What to have ready
None of this is required. All of it makes the first visit shorter and cheaper.
- The brandGenerac, Kohler or Rehlko, Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, Champion, Honeywell. It is usually on the front of the enclosure.
- Model and serial numberOn the data plate inside the enclosure, normally on the inside wall or the engine housing. A photo of it on your phone is perfect.
- Any code on the controllerWrite down exactly what the display says, including the number. A fault code turns a diagnostic visit into a repair visit with the right part already on the truck.
- When it startedAfter a storm, after the last exercise cycle, after a fuel delivery, or it has been sitting for years. The timeline usually points at the cause.
- What it is actually doingCranks but will not fire, starts then shuts down, runs but the house stays dark, alarm with no obvious symptom, or nothing at all when you press the button.

Before we arrive
What the symptom usually means
Not a diagnosis — a generator can produce the same symptom from several directions. It does tell you how urgent the call is, and what to write down first.
- Cranks but will not start
- Most often fuel delivery or ignition. On a unit that has sat a long time, it can also be a battery with enough charge to crank slowly and not enough to fire.
- Starts, runs briefly, then shuts down
- Frequently a protective shutdown — low oil pressure, high temperature, or fuel pressure sagging under load. The controller usually logged a code when it happened.
- Yellow maintenance light
- Scheduled service is due by hours or by date. Not an emergency, and not something to leave until storm season.
- Red alarm light
- An active fault has locked the unit out. Write down the code before clearing anything, then call.
- Generator runs, house stays dark
- Points at the transfer switch, a main breaker, or the load side rather than the engine. Different diagnosis entirely.
- It stopped running its weekly exercise
- Often the controller left in OFF after a service or a storm, a tripped breaker, or a dead battery. Worth calling about, because a generator that does not exercise is a generator nobody is watching.

Repair, or replace?
On an older unit that has been neglected, the honest answer is sometimes replacement rather than another repair. We will tell you which, with the reasoning, and you can decide.
