Dealer status matters less on the day of the install than it does three years later. It decides where your warranty registration lives, who can file a claim without an argument, whether the correct part is a phone call or a scavenger hunt, and whether the technician standing at your unit has actually been trained on that control board.
We install Generac because it is the brand with the deepest residential parts and service network in this part of Texas, which is the practical difference between a two-day repair and a two-week one. That is also why it is the platform most of our standby installations are built on.
We also install Kohler, and we service Briggs & Stratton, Cummins, Champion and Honeywell units. Nothing on this page requires you to choose Generac.
Two platforms
Air-cooled and liquid-cooled
The split that decides most of the project. It is settled by the load calculation, not by preference.
Air-cooled home standby
The familiar unit on a pad beside the house. An air-cooled engine, an aluminum enclosure with a powder-coated finish, and a footprint small enough to sit in a side yard while clearing the code-required distances from windows, doors and vents.
- Covers the large majority of residential installations we do.
- Generally spans the smaller and mid-range kW classes, which is enough for a managed whole-home design on most properties.
- Runs at roughly 65 to 67 dB(A) from about 23 feet under normal load, comparable to an AC condenser.
- Lower installed cost, simpler site work, shorter service intervals on consumables.
Liquid-cooled home standby
A larger machine with a radiator and a proper cooling system, built on a heavier engine platform. This is where you end up when the load calculation comes back high enough that an air-cooled unit would spend its life at the limit.
- Suits large homes, properties with several heavy motor loads, and small commercial buildings.
- Handles sustained high load better, with more thermal headroom in a Texas summer.
- Larger pad, larger fuel demand, and a bigger footprint to site.
- Also the class most commercial projects start from.
If you are trying to work out which side of that line your property falls on, start with generator sizing. Well pump starting current and a second air conditioning compressor are the two loads that most often push a house up a class.
Monitoring
Mobile Link, and why remote monitoring earns its place
A standby generator is a machine that sits unattended for months. The failure mode nobody plans for is not dramatic: the switch gets left in OFF after a service visit, or the battery charger quietly quits, and nothing announces it until the night the utility drops.
Mobile Link is Generac’s remote monitoring service. The unit reports its own state to an app, so you can confirm it is in AUTO, see that the weekly exercise completed, and get an alert when it throws a warning rather than discovering it during an outage. With your permission, your servicing dealer can see the same data, which shortens the diagnostic conversation considerably.
It does not replace a service visit. It cannot test a battery under load or measure fuel pressure while the engine runs, which is what a scheduled maintenance visit is for. What it does is stop small problems staying invisible for six months.

Generac or Kohler
An honest comparison
We install both, so there is no incentive here to talk you into one. Both make capable home standby equipment. Both will keep your house running. The differences that actually affect you are less about the machine and more about what happens after it is installed.
Generac has the larger residential installed base in North Texas and the deeper local parts and dealer network. In practice that means better parts availability and more technicians who have worked on your exact controller. It also has the broadest ecosystem, so load control, battery storage and monitoring integrate without adapting between vendors.
Kohler has a strong reputation for engine build quality and for tight voltage and frequency regulation, which matters if you are running sensitive electronics or equipment that dislikes dirty power. The network is smaller, so parts and brand-trained labor are less common on the ground.
Our recommendation comes out of your load profile, your site, your fuel situation and your budget. Read the Kohler page before you decide, and ask us to justify whichever one we put in front of you.

Air-cooled or liquid-cooled, which do I need?
The load calculation decides, not preference. Air-cooled units cover the majority of homes and cost less to install. Liquid-cooled units make sense when peak demand is high enough that an air-cooled machine would run at its limit, which usually means a large house, several heavy motor loads, or a small commercial building. We size first and then pick the platform.
What is Generac Mobile Link?
Mobile Link is Generac’s remote monitoring service. The generator reports its own status to an app, so you can see whether it is in AUTO, whether it completed its exercise cycle, and whether it has thrown a warning, without walking outside. It will alert you when something needs attention, and with your permission your servicing dealer can see the same information. It is genuinely useful on a machine that spends most of its life unattended.
Does a Generac generator run on natural gas or propane?
Both are supported, and the unit is configured for the fuel it will run on during installation. Natural gas removes the tank and the deliveries but requires a meter and supply line sized to carry the generator. Propane carries more energy per unit, so peak output is slightly higher, but runtime depends on tank size.
Do I have to use a Generac dealer for warranty work?
Manufacturer warranties generally require that repairs are performed and documented by an authorized servicer to stay valid. Being the dealer that installed the unit means the registration, the service history and the warranty claims all sit in one place. If you already own a Generac that someone else installed, we can pick up servicing it.
How does Generac compare with Kohler?
Both build capable home standby equipment and both are worth considering. In practice, Generac has the larger residential installed base and the deeper local parts and dealer network, which shows up in service availability years down the line. Kohler is well regarded for engine build and voltage regulation. We install and service both, so our recommendation comes from your load profile, your site and your budget rather than from which brand we are stuck with.
Can you service a Generac that another company installed?
Yes. We start with a full diagnostic so we know its actual condition, then either repair it or put it on a normal service schedule. This is a large part of our service work, particularly for people whose original installer has moved on.
