The Electrical Work That Makes Backup Power Work
A generator is only as good as what it connects to. Panels, surge protection and load control are not side jobs here, they are the difference between a system that performs and one that trips.

Infrastructure, not odd jobs
These four services exist because backup power exposes the weak points in a house's electrical system, and there is no point installing a generator on top of them.
Almost every project on this page started as a generator conversation. Somebody wanted standby power, we ran the load calculation, and the calculation surfaced something: a panel with no room in it, a compressor that pulls too hard on startup, an EV charger drawing 48 amps for six hours a night, a service entrance with nothing protecting it.
None of that is exotic work. It is ordinary electrical work done in a specific order, by people who know what the generator is going to ask of it afterwards. That is the only real difference between calling us and calling a general electrician, and on a backup-power project it is a meaningful one.

Sequence matters
Do the load work before you buy the machine
This is the most expensive mistake we see, and it is entirely avoidable.
The wrong order
Size a generator against the whole house as it stands, including a compressor with an ugly inrush and a panel that is already full. You end up buying a bigger unit, a bigger transfer switch and sometimes a larger gas supply to feed it. Then the EV shows up two years later and it is tight again.
The right order
Measure the real loads. Add a soft starter where the startup demand is the problem rather than the running load. Decide which circuits genuinely have to run simultaneously and let load management enforce it. Then size the generator against that. Smaller machine, same result, less fuel.
None of this is a reason to delay a project for months. It is a reason to have the electrical assessment and the generator quote come from the same visit, which is how we run them.
Worth a look
Signs the electrical side needs attention first
- The lights dim noticeably every time the air conditioning starts
- The panel is full, or somebody has put two conductors under one breaker to make room
- The service is 100 amps and the house has since gained a shop, a pool or an electric vehicle
- There is a fuse box, or a panel labeled Federal Pacific, Zinsco or Challenger
- Breakers trip in a pattern you have learned to work around rather than fix
- Electronics have failed after storms in a way that felt like more than coincidence
- An existing generator bogs down or trips when a large load starts
Any one of those is worth a look on its own. Panel and service capacity is where most of them lead, and the rest usually land on load management. Neither of them requires you to commit to a generator to get an honest answer.

What people ask about the electrical side
Do you do general electrical work, or only backup power?
Our work concentrates on the electrical infrastructure that backup power depends on: service and panel capacity, transfer equipment, surge protection, load management and EV charging. We are a licensed Texas electrical contractor, TECL #41587, working under Master Electrician oversight, but we are not trying to be the company you call about a bad switch in a bedroom.
Why does a generator quote turn into a panel conversation?
Because a generator installation involves opening up the service and looking at what is actually there. A transfer switch has to land somewhere, the load calculation has to reconcile with the existing panel, and problems that were tolerable on utility power become real when a machine has to carry the same house. Better to find that on the quote visit than during commissioning.
Can this work be done after my generator is already installed?
Yes. Surge protection, soft starters, load-management modules and smart thermostats can all be added to a system that has been running for years. If your existing generator struggles when the air conditioning kicks in, or you have added an EV or a shop since it went in, that is usually a load-management problem rather than a reason to replace the machine.
Do you handle permits and utility coordination?
Yes. Service changes and panel upgrades typically require a permit, an inspection and coordination with the utility to disconnect and reconnect the meter. We handle that sequence as part of the project. What we cannot control is the utility schedule, so we tell you the realistic version rather than the optimistic one.
Will an electrical upgrade let me install a smaller generator?
Frequently, yes, and that is the argument for doing the load work first. Managed circuits, a soft starter on the air-conditioning compressor and a prioritized essential-load design can let a smaller unit cover the same house. The savings usually show up in the generator, the transfer switch and sometimes the gas supply as well.
