Standby Generators for Springtown, TX and the Wise County Line

The place
Twenty-five cold springs, a CCC tabernacle and a porcupine
Captain Joseph Ward founded the settlement in 1859 and it was known as Littleton Springs before the name shortened. It came from twenty-five natural cold springs flowing from the base of a nearby hillside. The post office opened in 1875, incorporation followed in 1884, and by 1877 the town was calling itself the educational hub of Northwest Texas, home to the College Hill Institute.
The landmarks are unusually checkable. The Tabernacle, an open community gathering structure, was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1936 and restored between 2010 and 2016. The Wild West Festival has run on the third Saturday of September since 1984. The high school mascot has been the Porcupine since the mid-1920s, an animal notably not native to this part of Texas, and the spirit word POJO dates to 1983.
The census counted 3,064 residents across 3.03 square miles in 2020, with a median age of 33.9 and an estimate of 4,181 by 2023. Growth here resumed after 1960 on the back of commuters heading into Fort Worth down the Jacksboro Highway, which is still the corridor that defines the town. Everything past the last streetlight belongs to the wider Parker County picture: no gas main, a well, a septic field and a long service drop.
Utilities
Two electric providers and one gas company that is not the county norm
The city publishes all of it on a single new-residents page, which makes this one of the easier towns to get right and one of the easiest to get wrong.
Oncor
Listed twice on the city page, once under its legacy TXU Electric Delivery name. Oncor owns the wire and restores the outage; the retail provider on your bill does neither. In 2024 Oncor reported an average of 532.5 minutes off per customer to the federal government, and 558.8 minutes in 2021.
Tri-County Electric Cooperative
Member-owned, outside retail competition, and a listed member of the local chamber. In 2021 the co-op reported 1,907.9 minutes per member, close to 32 hours. Long lines to relatively few meters is the structural reason, and it is the reason standby power sells itself out here.
Atmos Energy Mid-Tex
261 residential and 81 small commercial meters, per the Railroad Commission for 2022. Weatherford, Aledo, Hudson Oaks and Willow Park are Texas Gas Service towns. Swapping those two names is the fastest way to spot a quote that was written before anyone looked at the address.
With 261 residential gas meters against 3,064 residents, most homes in town and effectively all the surrounding Parker and Wise county acreage are on propane or all-electric. Why people call
It is the distribution system, not the state grid
Plenty of generator marketing is built on predicting the next statewide failure. We would rather not, partly because it is unprovable and partly because the recent evidence points somewhere more local. In late April 2026 the National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado in this area with peak winds around 105 mph, and nearly 40,000 Oncor customers across North Texas were out that night. On 19 April 2025, Parker and Erath counties both took confirmed EF-1 tornadoes on the same day.
None of that is about generation capacity. It is about poles, spans and limbs. Oncor has noted that ice can multiply the weight of a tree branch up to thirty times, which is why treed rural lots lose power in a winter storm that barely inconveniences a town center.
Restoration then follows a fixed order: transmission, main feeders, tap lines, and individual services last. That order is correct, because it returns the most people fastest. It also means a house on a long line waits, and a standby generator is simply the decision not to.

Is my gas company Atmos or Texas Gas Service?
Atmos Energy, Mid-Tex Division. This is the only town in our Parker County territory on Atmos rather than Texas Gas Service, and the city lists Atmos as the gas contact on its own new-residents page. The Railroad Commission recorded 261 residential and 81 small commercial meters here for 2022. Against a population of 3,064 that means most households, and almost all the surrounding acreage, are on propane or all-electric instead.
The city lists three electric numbers. Which one is mine?
The city page names TXU Electric Delivery, Tri County Electric Coop and Oncor Delivery. TXU Electric Delivery is the legacy name for what is now Oncor, so functionally this is a two-utility town: Oncor, which delivers for whichever retail provider bills you, and Tri-County Electric Cooperative, where you are a member with no retail choice. The co-op has deep roots in this corner of the county; its first line ran from Weatherford to Azle, straight through here.
Does living in two counties change anything?
It can. The city straddles the Parker and Wise county line, and Springtown ISD is primarily in Parker County with a portion extending into Wise. County lines govern septic authorization and, outside city limits, permitting practice. Parker County states that it does not issue building permits or certificates of occupancy in its unincorporated areas. We confirm which county a rural address actually sits in before we plan the paperwork, because the mailing address does not always tell you.
Are storms a real risk here or is that just sales talk?

On 19 April 2025 an EF-1 was confirmed elsewhere in Parker County with winds near 110 mph. The argument for standby power here is not a forecast about the state grid. It is that wind takes poles and limbs down, and a house on a long rural tap line sits near the end of the restoration order.
What does a propane install look like on a few acres?
A 500-gallon tank is the usual starting point for a 22 kW unit running a house for several days. The tank has to sit at least ten feet from the generator, the generator needs five feet of clearance from any operable window, door or vent and from combustible walls, and the pad has to stay clear of the septic drainfield and the well head. On most properties out here it is those four constraints, not preference, that decide where the machine goes.
